Dear Members of the Mill Art Center and Gallery, We are looking forward to seeing you this week when you drop off your art for Every Picture Tells a Story. The weather looks cooperative, fingers crossed. We will have a Silent Auction during the opening reception, and if you would like to donate a work of art, please bring it with you when you drop off your artwork.

What’s New This Month A couple of helpful additions have been made to the website. If you hover your cursor over Membership, you will see the drop-down for the art identification form and guidelines, as well as our exhibition schedule for the year and archived newsletters.

It is our hope that this will make things easier for you. If you hover your cursor over Calendar and Special Events, you will see that Ella has created a beautiful calendar for you to refer to for classes, presentations, and gallery events.

Women in Art - An Art History Series
Lecture #1
“Why Have There Been No Great Women Artists?” We will consider the idea of “greatness” and look at the institutional structures that, historically, came between women artists and greatness. We will examine the careers of some women artists who managed to pursue successful careers to see what allowed them to flourish. They will include Artemisia Gentileschi, Angelica Kaufman, Elizabeth Vigée Lebrun, and Mary Cassatt.
Lecture #2
“Women Married to Prominent Male Artists.” This talk will address examples of artist couples such as Georgia O’Keeffe/Alfred Stieglitz, Jackson and Lee Pollock, The DeKoonings, and Rodin/Camille Claudel. We will consider whether this is a mixed blessing or a curse….or both.
Lecture #3
“Women in Art Since the ‘70s: What Has Changed.” This talk will highlight the changes in the art history discipline and societal changes that help us to now honor contemporary women artists. Content has become more purposeful and relevant, critics are younger and diverse, and “reconsiderations” have allowed us to place more women on the “honor roll” of art history. Register here

Volunteers needed for Drop Off: I would love for one more person to volunteer to help me with receiving art on Thursday January 29th from 10-2 and one more person on Friday, January 30th from 10-2. Volunteers needed on Saturday, February 7th for the opening reception of Every Picture Tells a Story. Times to be coordinated, the reception takes place from 3-5.

“Before printing was discovered, a century was equal to a thousand years.” - Henry David Thoreau Printmaking emerged in Han Dynasty China, sometime between 206 B.C. and 220 A.D., as an affordable alternative to communicating and sharing art, in comparison to one-of-a-kind artworks such as paintings, drawings, and manuscripts. Ancient examples, including the world’s oldest dated and printed book, titled the Diamond Sutra (868 CE), were originally developed to print text and images onto silk and paper. In the fifteenth century, the influence of ancient Chinese woodblock printing on Europe’s artistic scene was evident in woodcuts seen on playing cards and depicting religious images. This century also saw the rise of a new method of engraving and etching, intaglio, where the image is incised into a material’s surface instead of raised. Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528), one of the German Renaissance’s most well-known printmakers, is commonly credited for elevating printmaking to the status of ‘fine art.’ His Meisterstiche, or master engravings, depict the intaglio printing process masterfully, with The Knight, Death and the Devil, Melancholia I, and Saint Jerome in His Study all being engraved on copper and completed between 1513 and 1514. From the seventeenth to nineteenth centuries, Ukiyo-e flourished as an artistic genre in Japan. The Ukiyo-e, or “picture(s) of the floating world,” style produced famous woodblock prints with subjects ranging from sumo wrestlers and folk tales to landscapes and erotica, including Katsushika Hokusai’s The Great Wave Off Kanagawa (1831). Printing became cheaper and faster during the late eighteenth century thanks to Alois Senefelder’s use of grease and water to invent the process of lithography. Jules Chéret’s Les Pays des Fées (1889) and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec’s Moulin Rouge: La Goulue (1891) demonstrate how lithography fueled mass media in the nineteenth century, leading directly to the twentieth-century’s use of screen printing and printmaking as tools for social change. This is a theme that remains integral to today’s print and media industries, as seen in modern political pamphlets and fine art printing.
